New UN Report Challenges Overpopulation Myth

New York -- A new UN report studying the effects of population growth on
the environment provides information that challenges some of the most
fundamental assumptions of population control, assumptions used to justify
sterilization, abortion and contraception. "World Population Monitoring
2001," prepared by the Population Division of the Department of Economic
and Social Affairs, emphasizes that many of the most dire predictions
about the consequences of population growth have proven unfounded, and
remain unlikely to occur even if the world population rises to 8.9 billion
by 2050.

The most common argument against population growth is that the earth has a
"carrying capacity," a threshold number of humans beyond which
civilization will descend into chronic famine, disease, poverty and civil
strife. According to the report, however, "Over the period 1961-1998,
world per capita food available for direct human consumption increased by
24 per cent, and there is enough being produced for everyone on the planet
to be adequately nourished." Also, general advances in technology and
industry have resulted in a dramatic growth in average material well-being
- "From 1900 to 2000, world population grew from 1.6 billion persons to
6.1 billion. However, while world population increased close to 4 times,
world real gross domestic product increased 20 to 40 times, allowing the
world to not only sustain a four-fold population increase, but also to do
so at vastly higher standards of living." The report shows guarded
optimism that these trends will continue, and that food production will
continue to grow along with the population.

Population control advocates also argue that growth will strip the world
of nonrenewable resources like oil and minerals, thereby throwing
economies into disarray. But, the Population Division report says, "During
recent decades new reserves have been discovered, producing the seeming
paradox that even though consumption of many minerals has risen, so has
the estimated amount of the resource as yet untapped."

The latest argument concerns the environmental effects of population
growth, including pollution, habitat destruction and the extinction of
species. The report contends that population growth may contribute to some
of these problems, especially fisheries depletion and water contamination,
but "In general, population growth appears to be much less important as a
driving force of such problems than is economic growth and technology."
Even global warming will be ".mainly due to modes of production, not to
the size, growth and distribution of population." Consumption patterns
among developed countries with declining populations also have a
detrimental impact on the environment.

The report advances no specific policy initiatives, but it emphasizes that
population is only one of a number of complex, interrelated issues
affecting the environment and human development. When famine occurs, for
instance, it can be because "People have inadequate physical and/or
economic access to food as a result of poverty, political instability,
economic inefficiency and social inequity," not simply because there are
too many people.

The report brings into question the ever-constant UN goal of decreasing
birth rates worldwide. The Population Division, which makes all UN
predictions about population growth, is seen as mostly non-ideological.

Out of curiosity, are the following problems and similar others addressed:
economic inability to pay for food;
transportation of produce;
religious issues in some areas that prevent external assistance;
political ideology pressure;
rights of self-determination;
et cetera....
"During recent decades new reserves have been discovered, producing the seeming paradox that even though consumption of many minerals has risen, so has the estimated amount of the resource as yet untapped."

Of course, the resources of this biosphere aren't infinite, however, are they? How would that fit with Christian Dominionist theories?

Hi,

As far as I know the UN report didnt address the issues of transportation distribution and use of resources. I was hoping that it would. The worlds hunger problems and other problems stem from Philosiophies, Religions (non-Christian), Factions, and poor Distribution, not from availability.

God has created and continues to sustain the earth with the sufficient capability of abundantly sustaining Human life. The lack comes from religions and philosophies that refuse and ignore what God is providing, for instance India has a the worlds largest cattle population yet is unwilling to feed its people with the available cattle.

The earth Definatly will Not last forever.

The earth has a beginning in Genesis and an end in Revelation.

Peter talks about this earth dissolving and the new coming earth.

2Peter 3:7,11-13

But the heavens (sky-space) and the earth, which now are, by the same word (Gods word) are kept in store (usable condition), preserved unto fire against the day of Judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Seeing then that All these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all Holy conversation and godliness,

Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements (earth) shall melt with fervent heat?

Nevertheless we (Christians), according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Also the Book of Revelation describes the new heaven and new earth.

Revelation21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

The UN report was honestly reporting what Christians already know and that is that God provides the increase to sustain human life here on earth.

Anyone who is putting their trust in the earth to keep them alive will perish with the earth. Even basic science states that the earth cannot last forever.

It would have been interesting to see what the UN would have said about distribution, etc. I'm sure with the UN's limited resources, however, there was probably enough to keep them busy with the report as it is.
Of course for religious as well as health reasons, many different people will not eat certain things. I hardly eat meat, and do not eat yolk, nor much in the way of shellfish, strictly for health reasons. For but one consideration, I consider it a duty to keep myself healthy for my family's sake.

When you mention religions and philosophies that refuse and ignore what God is providing, I cannot help but consider that God has provided all manners of things. Whereas you might enjoy a fine porterhouse every evening, there is no doubt that I would suffer greatly. In Wisdom indeed there are many fine plants and fish provided for sustenance - some of which might cause your suffering. Woe to me should I even remotely be at cause for a burden to be placed upon you your suffering afflictions, without relieving you of the burden. Matt 23

Even more woe to me should I be at cause for placing undue burdens upon many future generations by not caring for the Host's fine estate and the party with its food and drink provided for the marriage celebration. Matt 22

Hi,

This information is from a UN written report not from a UN web site.

To find the original source for the information send and e-mail to infonet@prolifeinfo.org

Request the original UN report source on the UN World Population info report as was reported in their Newsletter on approximately September 16, 2001.

Hope this helps,

God Bless You,

David

I have done lots of research on the issue of hunger, and the best single statement I can make on it is that there are very few people starving in the world, but there are lots of people being starved.
For those of you with an interest, there are two books that really sum up the problem neatly. The First is "Food for Beginners" by Susan George and the Second is "12 Myths About Hunger." by Frances Moore Lappe (sp?) and I have attached a website that gives a quick overview, and while I disagree on a number of points, both books clearly show that population/food production are not the issue at all.
